The
prolific waters of the Great
Barrier Reef provide for some of the best sport fishing in the world. With
the cooler months from (May to August) providing for good Spanish Mackerel
and juvenile Black Marlin fishing. While during the warmer months of
(September to January) the fishing is at it finest with Wahoo, large
Spanish Mackerel, sailfish, Black Marlin, Yellow fin Tuna and
Mahi Mahi turning up. With such a diverse range of species it makes
for an exciting days fishing.
Generally
four or five rods are trolled at any one time with line classes varying
from 6kg to 24kg depending on the size and species being targeted.
Trolling is performed with a combination of baits and lures. Baits such as
Mullet and Gar Fish (Ballyhoo) are the most common. Artificial lures range
from bibless minnows to small and medium skirted lures such as the Pakula
cockroach.
Superb reef fishing is also found throughout the Great
Barrier Reef with species such as the Red Emperor and Coral Trout being
two of the favourites. Fresh baits of squid and fish flesh are used
on 8/0 hooks in depths of 30m to 50m of water.
