Giant Black Marlin fishing Cairns Australia

From September to December the waters of the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns to Lizard Island are unquestionably recognized as the best giant marlin fishing worldwide. The home of 1000lb plus Giant Black Marlin, the big game paradise.

Sea Venture was custom built specifically for the purpose of spending extended time at sea hunting for these magnificent fish.

Both bait and lures are used though the preferred method of targeting Giant Black Marlin is to troll two dead baits, a skipping bait and a swimming bait from the outriggers at around 5 knots, on short stiff bent butt rods, reels loaded with  60kg (130lb) line. Baits used may be as large as 10kg and include Scad, Rainbow Runner, Scaly Mackerel, Yellowfin Tuna, and Queenfish. Live baiting is also used, and is either drifted or slowly trolled. The use of lures is also becoming more popular with both soft heads and hard plastic kona head style being used.
